Putney Bathroom and Toilet Refresh: Working With the Character of an Older Home

The client contacted us because their bathroom and toilet needed a proper refresh. The space was suffering from damp, peeling paint, loose tiles, and poor-quality plumbing that had previously been installed out of line. What should have been a simple bathroom update quickly became a more detailed repair and improvement project.

At first, the client hoped to keep the existing units and simply repair the shower area. However, once we inspected the room more closely, it became clear that the problem was not only cosmetic. The plaster and paint were peeling, the tiles were coming away from the wall, and many of the corners, frames, and wall lines were not straight. Like many older London homes, the room had movement, uneven angles, and a lot of natural “wonkiness” built into the structure.

Rather than fighting against the character of the house, we decided to work with it.

The Challenge

The main issues were:

• Damp and peeling paint
• Tiles coming loose from the wall
• Poorly installed plumbing
• Uneven wall lines and corners
• Bowed surfaces and awkward angles
• Existing fittings that the client wanted to keep where possible

In a perfectly square modern property, a bathroom can often be finished with sharp lines, clean tile edges, and simple white walls. In this case, that approach would have highlighted every uneven corner and made the space feel more obviously out of shape.

So instead of trying to force the room to look perfectly straight, we used design choices that helped soften and disguise the imperfections.

The Approach

We focused on texture, lighting, and colour.

Textured wall finishes were used to draw attention away from the uneven surfaces. Instead of flat walls that would show every bow and dent, the texture gave the room depth and made the irregularities feel intentional.

We also used darker colours on the woodwork. This helped create a stronger visual outline around the frames and edges, giving the impression of straighter lines even where the original structure was not perfectly square.

Lighting also played an important role. By carefully considering how light would fall across the room, we were able to reduce harsh shadows and make the space feel warmer, calmer, and more considered.

The Result

The finished bathroom and toilet feel refreshed, cleaner, and much more balanced. The damp and peeling areas were repaired, the loose finishes were dealt with, and the room now has a stronger visual style that suits the age and character of the property.

Most importantly, the design does not fight against the house. Instead, it uses texture, colour, and lighting to make the space feel intentional, comfortable, and full of character.

This project is a good example of how older homes often need a more thoughtful approach. Sometimes the best result does not come from trying to make everything look brand new and perfectly straight. It comes from understanding the property, working with its quirks, and making smart design choices that improve both the appearance and the feel of the space.
