Bathroom Installation in Fulham: what is involved

By the Fulham BM team — we have been installing bathrooms across Fulham and SW London for more than twenty years.

When people ask us what a bathroom installation in Fulham actually involves, the honest answer is that the work almost always runs in the same order — we strip the old room out, run the first-fix plumbing and electrics, waterproof the areas that will get wet, tile, and then come back to fit the suite and finish the details — and the part that decides whether the room still looks right in ten years is rarely the part anyone worries about while they are choosing taps.

What does a bathroom installation actually involve?

A full installation is really the same room rebuilt from the floor up. We take everything out, open the walls where the pipework and wiring need to move, and tank the wet zones so water cannot reach the structure behind the tiles, and it is only once all of that is sound that we tile, fit the suite and the glass, and spend the last stretch on the things that quietly matter — the grout lines, the silicone, the way the floor falls to the drain — which are the difference between a bathroom that is finished and one that merely looks it.

Why does the waterproofing matter as much as the finish?

Because it is the layer you never see but the first thing to fail, leak and crack when it is rushed. Tanking the shower and the surrounding wet zones is what keeps water from working its way into a timber floor, and in the Victorian and Edwardian houses that make up so much of Fulham, where floors are timber rather than concrete, leaving it out is the single most common reason we are called back to a bathroom that someone else fitted only a few years earlier.

What is different about a bathroom in a Fulham property?

Usually it is the building rather than the bathroom that sets the pace. Period terraces have floors that flex and often want strengthening or a decoupling layer before they will happily take stone, mansion flats and conversions share their drainage with the homes around them so the waste has to be thought through rather than assumed, and the original details worth keeping — a run of cornicing, a sash window, a bit of joinery — tend to reward working around them instead of tearing them out. We plan around the house we are actually in, which is a large part of why two bathrooms of the same size can take quite different amounts of time.

How can you tell it has been done properly?

You tend to feel it in the details more than in anything grand. Water should run to the drain without leaving a puddle behind, the silicone should read as one clean line, the extractor should genuinely clear the steam rather than hum politely at it, and whoever fitted it should be as happy to talk you through what sits behind the walls as what is on them. If it is the timeline you are weighing up, we have set out where the days really go in our guide to how long a bathroom renovation takes, along with the five things that most often go wrong.

If you are thinking about a new bathroom and would rather understand how it comes together before committing to anyone, tell us about your room and we will talk you through how we would approach it.

  • "I have just renovated the living room, and I am impressed with the work done.
The team installed an in-wall extension socket as part of a wider renovation, and the finish is absolutely seamless.
The socket sits perfectly flush, the plastering is smooth, and everything was left spotlessly clean. Professional, punctual, and would highly recommend to anyone looking for quality building work."
